End Of An Era

In December last year, the father of the modern dental implant Per Ingvar Branemark died at the age of 85 in his hometown of Gothernburg, Sweden.

Before Branemark, scientists thought that metallic implants stayed in place because of mechanical retention. This means that implants must be anchored to wide areas of bone with multiple screws. Branemark and his team performed experiments on rabbits. They found that titanium oculars placed into the lower leg bones of rabbits could not be removed from the bones after a period of healing. This phenomenon was named osseointegration. With this understanding, dental implants could be as small as the root of a tooth.

Though many European dentists still swear by it, the design of the original Branemark system with its external hex, is probably outdated. Newer designs are more forgiving and easy to use. In spite of that, Prof Branemark will be remembered and respected as a pioneer in this field of dentistry by future generations of dentists.

Miss World?

Since young, I’ve wondered why Miss Universe pageants only featured humans. If we’re opening the competition to all living things in the universe, then certainly, participation should be open to all females on Noah’s Ark. Perhaps some Martians too. It’s so easy to exclude worthy contenders.

But seriously (or maybe not), someone by the name of Dr Prem Jagyasi came up with his list of the most beautiful women in the world (by nationality). It seems that the post has gone viral in Thailand. Well, I’m not sure how Dr Prem arrived at the results, but here they are in no order of merit.

1. Ukraine
2. Sweden
3. Thailand
4. Bulgaria
5. Russia
6. Netherlands
7. Lebanon
8. Poland
9. India
10. Brazil
11. Italy
12. Canada
13. Serbia
14. South Korea
15. Croatia
16. Columbia
17. Argentina
18. Ethiopia
19. Romania

It’s all here

Why do I get the feeling that this list was “made up” at random just to create a talking point? I confess that I’ve not been to most of the countries in the list, but the problem is not with his inclusions but his unfair exclusions of countries which are teeming with beauties. Common sense tells us that it’s possible to find beautiful women in any country and with globalisation, nationality may have nothing to do with ancestry. What happened to petite French girls? Not good enough for Dr Prem? It’s also amazing that Dr Prem missed out China – the most populous country in the world. And he probably hadn’t been to Vietnam either.

Love Boat Illusion?

Many years ago, the navy made a very interesting advertisement showing a scene in a pub with a group of pretty girls chatting with a group of guys from the navy. It was one of model/actress Seraphina Wee’s first public apperance.

Girls: “So what do you guys do for a living.”

Guys: “We’re in the Navy.”

Girls: Something about perks and benefits

Guys: “The sun, the sand and the sea.”

Girls: “Does it pay?”

Guys: “You bet.”

Photo from Facebook.

They didn’t stop there. They’ve featured Zoe Tay as a naval medical officer and the now defunct Mediaworks also had Ann Kok in her white and navy blue. They’re at it again. This time, it’s a real naval officer in the form of ME1 Claire Teo. She was featured in Cyberpioneer over here and this seemed to have created quite a sensation even though Claire is obviously no Serina Wee. Anyway, I’ve been in the navy before and though women were almost non-existent on the ships back then, there were quite a number of beauties at the bases. Some were probably even prettier than Claire Teo if I may say so. I can’t figure out how Claire Teo could have caused such a sensation.

But the really funny part is this. Why is the ad telling us? Are they telling the girls that you can still look good if you join the navy? I hope so. If they are trying to attract the guys to sign on because they may stand a chance to meet Claire Teo, then they must be prepared to welcome a bunch of very horny, desperate and stupid recruits.

There are lots and lots of beautiful women all over the world. Do you need to sign on the navy to see Claire Teo?
